Six
Day Black Bear Hunt
Northwest
Montana is home to black bears of many different color phases. The
bears range from blonde, cinnamon and chocolate to jet black with
white chest markings. Approximately 30 percent of our bear population
are these "phase" bears. The bears we harvest range from five to seven
feet in length and weigh from 200 to 400 pounds. What some may lack
in size they make up for in beauty. All bear hunts are fair chase
methods, no dogs – no bait.
Our
fall bear hunting is unsurpassed with 90 percent of our clients
taking home a trophy. We use the spot and stalk method. This is
very effective in September when the bears can be found in the last
patches of producing huckleberries putting on winter reserves. A
client can expect to see from eight to ten bears during this hunt.
Our
spring bear hunt in May is less physically challenging as the bears
are found at lower elevations. When the bears leave their dens they
normally seek out grasses and clover to restore their stomachs to
working order. The bears also have romance on their minds and will
travel looking for a receptive sow. These habits make spot and stalk
techniques efficient as they put bears in the open where they can
be seen. The grassy edges of clear cuts and non-driveable logging
roads make ideal corridors for the bears.
